Just like other parts of the US, in Westchester County, termite swarms usually appear during spring for mating purposes and the establishment of new colonies.
Termites are a threat to the integrity of your building and for that reason, you should ensure it is well guarded against their infestation. Unfortunately, if you don’t have a trained eye, you may not be able to detect a termite infestation in its early stage; you are likely to notice it when a lot of damages have been done on your structure. Termites eat your wooden structure round the clock, making it almost or totally worthless within a very short time. Some buildings may even collapse as a result of termite attacks on their major supporting parts. The destruction caused by termites are more severe and result in more losses as compared to fire damages. This is how serious these pests are!
How to identify termite infestation
The ability to identify a termite infestation early enough has a long way to go with the prevention of possible losses that may otherwise occur in case the pests establish themselves in your building. With regular inspection of a building for termite presence, you’ll avoid nasty surprises caused by these pests. These are some of the major signs of termite infestation:
A swarm of winged insects. A termite swarm can be confused with an ant swarm. However, the front wings of an ant are longer as compared to its hind wings. On the other hand, all wings of a termite have nearly the same length. Another difference between an ant and a termite is that the former have antenna bent at an angle of ninety degrees but those of a termite are straight or may be drooping. A temporary swarm of termites in your building or from the soil surrounding it most likely to be a sign of an impending or current attack.
Hollow spots on wood
Termites usually attack exposed wood be it in a building or a furniture. If a wooden structure sounds hollow upon tapping it with a flat head screw driver any other similar tool, that could be an indication that it already attacked by termites.
Ant swarmer wings
Even if you don’t see live ant swarmers, the presence of their shed off wings around or in a structure may be a sign of termite infestation.
Cracked or bubbling paint. If you your wooden structure is painted but one day you notice that the paint is cracked or bubbled, that could be an alarm signaling that termites has already attacked it.
Those are some of the sign that you should watch for to spot a termite attack on your structure. Unfortunately, you may so busy with your work and other activities that you may not have ample time to conduct these checks. All in all, you shouldn’t only wait for these signs for you to act; prevention is far much better than cure.
